Clean Your Jewelry

Silver jewelry can darken over time. This is called oxidation and is a natural reaction. Some people like the darker look, but if you prefer to keep your silver bright, here are tips to help prevent tarnish and clean it when needed.

Silver Jewelry

Care Tips:

  • Remove silver jewelry before showering, sleeping, or physical activity.

  • Keep away from perfumes, creams, and cleaning products.

  • Do not wear silver jewelry in the sea, pool, or hot springs.

  • Store in a closed box or zip bag to reduce exposure to air and moisture.

  • Clean regularly to prevent buildup of dirt and oils, which can lead to tarnishing.

Routine Cleaning (every 1–2 months):

  • Fill a small pot or bowl with warm water and add a few drops of dish soap.

  • Place the jewelry in the water and gently clean with a soft toothbrush.

  • Rinse under running water and dry well with a towel.

For Tarnished or Oxidized Silver:

  • Line a bowl with aluminum foil.

  • Place the jewelry on the foil.

  • Sprinkle half a teaspoon of baking soda over the piece.

  • Pour warm water over it and wait until the bubbling stops.

  • Rinse well and dry with a towel.

This method removes tarnish without polishing.

Silver Polishing Cloth:

You can also use a silver polishing cloth to remove light tarnish.
Do not use this on gold-plated jewelry.

Gold-Plated Jewelry

Care Tips:

  • Gold-plated jewelry is delicate. Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, or using polishing cloths.

  • Do not shower, swim, or sleep with gold-plated jewelry.

  • Keep away from perfumes, creams, cleaning products, and anything acidic.

  • Store in an airtight bag or pouch to protect the plating and prevent scratches.

Cleaning Method:

  • Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.

  • Dip a soft cloth into the soapy water and gently wipe the jewelry.

  • Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft towel.

  • Let it air dry completely before storing.

If the Gold Plating Has Darkened:

Sometimes gold-plated jewelry can oxidize or darken. This doesn’t always mean the plating is damaged.

To clean:

  • Line a bowl with aluminum foil.

  • Place the jewelry on the foil.

  • Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda (no more than half a teaspoon).

  • Pour warm water over it and wait no more than 30 seconds.

  • Rinse immediately and dry thoroughly.

You can repeat the process once if needed, but avoid using too much baking soda or soaking for too long, as this can wear down the plating.
